Manuel Herrero is Associate Professor of Early Modern History at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville since 2001. He received his PhD from the European University Institute in Florence in 1998 and taught as a research fellow at the École des Hautes Étudhttps://www.upo.es/profesorado/mahersan/es en Sciences Sociales (Paris), the Istituto Benedetto Croce of Naples, the Center for the History of European Expansion (IGEER) in Leiden University, Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, Liège University, Complutense University of Madrid and at the Institute of History (CSIC) in Madrid. His research focuses on the comparative approach to the history of the mercantile republics of the Netherlands and Genoa, and on the complex constitution of the Hispanic Monarchy, Europe’s first transnational, polycentric and global empire. Other areas of research include Atlantic History and models of European expansion. His teaching permission allowing him to be at Harvard was granted by the Salvador de Madariaga Programme (Spanish Government, PRX14/00124).
