Novacella Abbey, Varna (BZ) – Italy
Novacella Abbey, Varna (BZ) – Italy
The Winter School “Philosophy of Work and Philosophy of Leisure in the Italian Traditions” (10-14 February 2025) is promoted by the University of Trento in partnership with ENS Lyon and KU Leuven and aims to offer a one-week advanced training school focused on the Italian philosophical traditions in the enchanting setting of the Novacella-Abbey, in South Tyrol.
The school is open to master’s and PhD students, as well as early-career researchers in philosophy, history, and literature.
Its goal is to gather a community of international students interested in exploring topics related to Italian culture in preparation for their theses, dissertations, or research projects. The school will provide them with lectures and seminar discussions of ongoing projects, led by a group of internationally renowned professors. Each day will focus on a chronological period and related authors, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era. After the welcome session on Monday, each morning will feature two lectures, while the afternoons will be dedicated to the presentation and the discussion of papers by the participants.
Classes and presentations will be conducted in English, Italian, German, Spanish or French. In the case of lectures and presentations in languages other than English, the organisation will provide an English translation of the lecture text to be shared with the participants. This is to ensure inclusivity and facilitate the widest possible accessibility to the initiative. Similarly, participants who present their papers in one of the indicated languages other than English are required to provide an English translation of the text to the organisation before the start of the school in order to share it with the participants.
Topic
The 2025 edition is organised in collaboration with the PNRR-PRIN project “Beyond Workism and the Work-Centered Society” (P2022N8YKE, CUP: E53D23020210001) and will explore the notions of leisure and work in the Italian traditions from multiple perspectives.
Paper proposals dealing with the philosophical, political, moral, literary or artistic representations of work, leisure, activity, inactivity, laziness are particularly appreciated.
A gender-oriented perspective is welcome.
Programme
This year, the Winter School will host lectures, among others, by Jean-Claude Zancarini (ENS Lyon), Romain Descendre (ENS Lyon), Robert Gordon (Cambridge), Andrea Robiglio (KU Leuven), Sandra Plastina (Calabria), Simonetta Bassi (Pisa), Roberto Lambertini (Macerata).
